Articles on the magnitude of the antibiotic resistance problem appeared in both Reuters and liveMint this week. According to the Reuters article, “Overuse of antibiotics in Europe is building widespread resistance and threatening to halt vital medical treatments….”

An article in the Johns Hopkins News-Letter discusses the discovery of a new bacterial antibiotic resistance gene.  The piece focuses on Ying Zhang and his team, who have just developed a new method to culture L-form bacteria that imitates more precisely the in vivo conditions in which the bacteria form.

BBC News writes about clinical trials that will begin next year that will test using silver against MRSA.

A WebMD article, on the other hand, covered a new strain of MRSA that is 5x deadlier than other strains.

And finally, in a Washington Post article, Sandra Boodman tells the story of a young woman who recently battled Lemierre syndrome, a one-in-one million disease which researchers say may have recurred due to antibiotic resistance.
